Harris, K., Sithole, A., & Kibirige, J. (2017). A Needs Assessment for the Adoption of Next
Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in K-12 Education in the United States. Journal of
Education and Training Studies, 5(9), 5462.
The article, “A Needs Assessment for the Adoption of Next Generation Science
Standards (NGSS) in K-12 Education in the United States by Karleah Harris, Alec Sithole and
Joachim Kibirige first appeared in the Journal of Education and Training Studies in 2017. The
purpose of the study was to incorporate NGSS into K-12 science education to become up to date
with the newest technological resources and fulfil the needs of the workplace. The researchers
were trying to incorporate the use of laptops in learning to be able to transition smoothly to the
Next Generation Science Standards. Researchers also found the need for students to be more
skilled in science so that they could fill the need of the low amount of people pursuing jobs in
STEM.
Quantitative research was performed in this study using a survey to determine if NGSS
was needed and if teachers were prepared to implement these standards. Teachers who taught
grades Pre-K through grades twelve who were from various schools in multiple states were
surveyed in this study. Overall, there were two hundred and fourteen teachers who participated in
the survey where they had to answer questions about their opinions, capabilities, and ideas
regarding the Next Generation Science Standards.
