The article I chose to analyze focuses on the importance of companies reporting on
what they are doing to ensure human rights are being upheld in their practices. By making this
a part of their annual reporting, it not only holds businesses accountable to ensuring human
rights are being upheld, but also works as a way to differentiate and market themselves. And
like FASB and GAAP have been created in order to determine what controls and standards need
to be in place when it comes to financial reporting, the UNGP (United Nations Guiding
Principles of Business and Human Rights) was formed in order to “set out how companies can
better understand how to prioritize the salient issues, put the necessary controls in place, and
monitor the effectiveness of such controls.” (Karmel)
