Reflective Essay 1: Art History
As a museum and historical relic lover, I prepared myself to be open, “empty” and “hungry”
for what I would observe from the trip with expectations to enjoy the artworks as they
naturally are and earn as many thoughts as possible. However, beyond my expectation, the
National Museum of Fine Arts was not just what to look into and evaluate the strengths and
weaknesses like an object, but became a wholesome time journey guiding me from the
prehistoric period to the most current era, from which I, with surprises and unavoidable
personal assumptions, also had chances to get to know and understand (a frankly tiny part of)
the contemporary humans. From what I have learned, some personal thoughts are collected,
which are definitely not about some theoretical or academic knowledge one can easily find
from online documents. They are more likely describing how art plays miracle roles in life
and in the function as representatives of the physical and mental world of a whole historical
period.
The first view archived is that art is the communication reflecting the relationship between
itself and the human brain. In other words, it shows the complexity of the way people of each
period feel, understand and then visualize their surroundings. In the prehistoric period, when
artworks were mainly created on everyday basic items such as bowls, bottles, or weapons, the
people and their activities, natural entities such as the sun, water, cloud, and animals were
illustrated, reflecting the whole culture of nature worship, people’s needs and wants. It was
