Pablo Picasso
20/02/2018
Pablo Picasso is one of the most recognized artists worldwide. He was born on
October 25, 1881 in Malaga, Spain and died on April 8, 1973 in Mougnis, France. His
real name was Pablo Ruiz Picasso. He was the most famous artist of the twentieth
century. Since a young age, he grew up in an artistic environment thanks to his father,
Jose Ruiz, who was an artist. His mother was called Maria Picasso. In Spain, it was
very common to adopt the father's last name, however, he decided to use his mother's
last name after the first pieces of work he started selling.
It was said that since infant, Pablo was a creative and authoritarian child. He
lived a part of his childhood together with two of his aunts where he was dedicated to
sewing uniform things. He played to cut out silhouettes and to stick them with flowers.
Many affirm that this influenced in the later invention of the collage that Picasso would
do. His father will be the responsible for initiating him into the painting. In september of
1891, José enters as a teacher in the School of Fine arts in La Coruña and takes the
whole family as well. From a very young age, he began to show that he was an artistic
prodigy. When he was only 14 years old, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in
Barcelona and passed the test in just one day being much younger than the age
required to get accepted into the academy. He gets accepted by presenting the canvas
Science and Charity”. After entering the academy, he transferred to the Academy of
San Fernando in Madrid and returned to Barcelona a couple years after that. During
that time, there was a very popular cafe called El Quatre Du Gats, which was
frequented by all the artists and intellectuals of his time and Picasso joined them. In

1898 he made his first exhibition in the cafe of Barcelona. In Autumn, two years later, he
visits Paris to see the Universal exhibition where he sells three drawings and where his
work begins to be recognized.
Between 1901 and 1904, Picasso alternated his residence between Madrid,
Barcelona and Paris. During these years, his painting entered into what was known as
the blue period as it was influenced by the Symbolism. This time is called the blue
period because most of the color his paintings were blue. In the blue period, Picasso's
paintings show despair, loneliness and tragedy due to the loss of his friend, Carlos
