Tablets in the Classroom
After visiting my daughter’s second grade classroom for a day, I left very disappointed in
the school system. The teacher was constantly on a tablet, which took her attention off of the
children. I witnessed several incidences where a student was reprimanded simply because the
teacher did not see what was really happening because she was looking at the tablet. The school
board needs to restrict the use of tablets by teachers in the classroom because when teachers use
tablets to check attendance, order student meals, and report student behavior, it causes disruption
of the learning process.
The first thing I noticed when I walked into the classroom was that the teacher was sitting
behind a desk with a tablet in her hand. She was looking around the classroom and calling out
names to check attendance. At first I thought that the use of the tablet to check attendance was
an improvement. After all, it does automatically notify the office immediately if a child is
absent. But then, after the attendance check was complete, the tablet remained in the teacher’s
hands. Once attendance had been taken the teacher should have been able to put the tablet down
