Beauty is given a new definition. Our society identifies people and values
them for their looks and nothing more. People are driven by this pressure to do
things like plastic surgery with an effort to live up to today’s expectation. The images
portrayed of a beautiful girl is slender thin, tall with identified curves and a man is
considered handsome when his muscular with six pack abs, but more certainly like
the models and Hollywood stars we see in newspapers, billboards, TV commercials
and different posters around the world. A good example is from the society we live
in, most young girls are brought up playing with Barbie dolls who happen to have a
defined measurement and body structure. But one question that we have to ask
ourselves is how far would we go for beauty? Before taking a step forward to go for
something as drastic as cosmetic surgery?
My very first criterion for “cosmetic surgery” is society has been brain
washed. Most men and women today pay more attention to cosmetic surgery for
them to consider themselves beautiful and also be considered perfect by the society
as they desire. Women want to be thin and men muscular with six-pack abs. But this
is also triggered by the Hollywood figures that are famous for their looks. Although
exercising could be the best solution to get in whatever shape you want to and even
less risky but people take busy lifestyle as an excuse and opt for cosmetic surgery,
which is definitely a dangerous choice. From an article on Forbes titled “The Hidden
Dangers Of Cosmetic Surgery” a chief plastic surgery at University of California, San
Diego Health system, Anne Wallace said that, “Women already 91% of cosmetic
patients, are electing to make quick fixes more than ever, under 5% more procedures
in 2010 than year before. However, psychologists and surgeons fear that many
patients do not fully gasp the gravity or potential risks of these questions. Any time
you tamper with the body’s balance, you risk creating new problem areas” says
Wallace. This clearly shows that even the surgeons do not encourage these surgeries
and that people should look at the pros and cons before making a choice. Children in
such situations seeing either their parents or relatives going through such
transitions can never escape.
