APPROACHES TO FOSTERING NEW ZEALAND’S ECONOMIC GROWTH
Economic growth is an increase in the Real GDP from one year to the next. Various
experts from the diverse fields have worried about the economic conditions of New
Zealand and suggested approaches to foster its economic growth. This essay compares and
contrasts the views put forward by the journalist Mr Rod Oram in his book published by
Penguin in 2007 and 2011 with the views put forward by Mr Rick Boven, Mr. Dan Bidois
and Ms. Catherine Harland in their discussion paper published by the New Zealand
Institute in 2010.
Both publications have recognised the fact that New Zealand (NZ) which was a wealthy
nation until early 1970s has seen significant decline in economic growth in 1980s. Authors
have evaluated the contributions made by various governments and businesses for the
growth of New Zealand economy and discussed ways to foster the economic growth of the
nation.
Oram (2007& 2011) worries about our declining ability to pay for the healthcare,
education, science, research, infrastructure, environmental quality and other comforts. At
the same time he sees the possibility of succeeding and becoming a role model for other
nations. For this, New Zealanders have to become realistic, ambitious and find common
ground among various culture and communities on which a feeling of togetherness
(nationhood) can be created towards the cause of building our nation. He further argues
that New Zealanders have to commit to the environment in real sense and build
economically, socially and culturally sustainable nation with new kind of leadership. This
