Applying Erikson’s Theory assignment
NAME:
DATE:
Erik Erikson suggested that there are eight periods of development, each
having a different conflict that must be resolved by the individual. The
person is faced with a choice between two ways of coping with each crisis---
one way leads to an adaptive positive personality adjustment, the other a
negative personality adjustment. If a person is unable to resolve a conflict in
a positive way at a particular stage, he/she will struggle with it later in life.
Read each of the following descriptions and then decide if the situation
would promote or hinder that developmental stage. You might want to print
this document out, then write the choice on the blank. If the parent,
caregiver, or peer(s) is hindering the development, describe on the blank
below how the situation could be altered. If the situation would promote
that developmental stage, continue the scenario with the positive results that
could occur.
Type either the word Positive or Hindering before your paragraphs. This will tell me if
you believe each situation is a positive situation that will support development for the
person, or a negative one that will hinder their development. Then your paragraph that
follows will explain why you chose your answer.
1. Trust Versus Mistrust
Candice is six months old. Her mother is single and works days. Candice
stays in a local childcare facility while her mother is a work. In the evening,
Candice is at home with her mother. Once Candice is asleep, Candice’s
mother sometimes goes next door to talk to a neighbor, leaving Candice
alone. Several evenings Candice has awakened and cried. She becomes
fearful when her mother does not come right away.
1. Type your answer here: Positive or Hindering? Why?
This is hindering because Candice does not see her mother through out the day and when
she is waking at night her mother is not responding fast enough to her needs. This could
cause mistrust in Candice because her mother is not as responsive as she could be. It is
also not a good idea to leave a child alone in the house even if she is only next door.

Maybe her mother could have the neighbor come to their house so that she can respond to
Candice when she is in need immediately.
2. Autonomy Versus Shame and Doubt
Joe is 2 ½ years old. He and his father go to the park every day. Joe used to
play with some other children at the park, but one time he fell and cut his
forehead. He had to have stitches. Since then, Joe’s father does not let him
play with the other children. He holds Joe’s hand tightly and they quietly
walk through the park watching the ducks in the lake. Joe misses playing
