Applied Language
Linguistic anthropology is as essential as its biological or archeological counterparts.
Thanks to it, we can understand other cultures and the nature of human language. Scholars in the
field seek to understand the social and cultural foundations of language itself while exploring
how social and cultural formations are grounded in linguistic practices. One important practice in
this field is to study and protect languages, especially those that are endangered.
As seen in the film The Linguists, many languages are on the verge of extinction.
However, thanks to Dr. Harrison and Anderson and their applied method of recording, some of
these languages could be preserved. Even for some of those languages, it was their first time
being recorded. But it is not only about the endangered languages. In other parts of the world,
some governments are trying to conserve minority languages. One example is Canada’s French-
