Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World
1. The overall feeling of this article rather came off as a played-down bashing of all white
Americans. It felt very angry and annoyed. He insists that someone show him a page in
history where a person is not being degraded as a slave, he says, “Can the whites deny
this charge?”. Walker knows for a fact that he is correct in that statement. He low-key
bashes one of America’s very own founding fathers by saying, “It is indeed surprising,
that a man of such great learning, combined with such excellent natural parts, should
speak so of a set of men in chains”. He is pretty much calling Mr. Jefferson incompetent
and little minded. Walker says, “ I therefore ask the whole American people, had I not
rather die, or be put to death, than to be a slave to any tyrant…”, showing how awful
being a slave really is. He would take death over taking orders from a white man. David
Walker goes on to question, “Are they not dying worms as well as we?”, to show his
point that in the long run, they all face the same ending. He sounds aggravated with the
