Critical Thinking (Lab 2)
1. An onion has 12 times more DNA than a human and raspberry has about 8% as much
DNA as humans. This was quite surprising because it meant that amount of DNA or
genetic material in an organism has nothing to do with its complexity. The article used
example like, “… amoebas oozing along in shallow ponds boast a genome 200 times as
large as those of Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking.” This is because chromosomes can
break and form more chromosomes, or merge into one. And not all DNA is useful, and
those that aren’t are labeled as junk DNA.
2. The sex chromosomes do not have true homologous partners like the autosomal
chromosomes because these chromosomes determine an organism’s biological sex. X
chromosomes and Y chromosomes, we receive one from each parents.
3. When a person has XXY chromosomes is known as Klinefelter syndrome. This person
would be a male with extra X chromosome. This person could produce less testosterone,
which means less muscle mass, less facial and/or body hair, and wider hips. This syndrome
makes male take more of feminine physical traits.
4. It is very important that mitosis result in daughter cells that are exact copies of the
original cells because if it isn’t, it cannot function as its meant. It means mutation and it
could lead to incomplete proteins.
5. It is important that meiosis result in daughter cells that have half of the original cell’s
