In my opinion the two major categories that of drugs presents or present the most serious problem
in the United States would be the health category, along with the addicts mental health status, also
including the Economic Category. First and foremost different types of drugs affect your body in
different ways, and the effects associated with drugs can vary from person to person along with your
overall health. According to the article of Better Health of today authors says that drug dependence
can quickly begin to affect your psychological and physical health, and can also affect your work and
social life.It is important to remember that there is no safe level of drug use. Be careful when taking
any kind of drug. Another major reason that drugs has impacted the health of addicts in society
today is because the amount and strength of the drug, and whether any other drugs are in the
system at the same time. It is important to remember that illegal drugs are not controlled substances,
and therefore the quality and strength may differ from one batch to another. How has drug use
impacted the economics in society today? The Federal Government and business community are
increasingly recognizing the negative consequences of substance abuse on the U.S. economy and
the Nation’s workforce. According to The Office of National Drug Control Policy the economic cost of
drug abuse in the United States was estimated at $193 billion in 2007,1 the last available estimate.
Some of those values could include:
● $120 billion in lost productivity, mainly due to labor participation costs, participation in
drug abuse treatment, incarceration, and premature death;
● $11 billion in healthcare costs – for drug treatment and drug‐related medical
consequences; and
● $61 billion in criminal justice costs, primarily due to criminal investigation, prosecution
and incarceration, and victim costs.
To what extent do mass media TV, movies, music accurately portray the consequences of the abuse
of the drug categories you have chosen? When you talk about mass media you talk about movies,
and sometimes the music industry. I can honestly say that I believe that the mass media of today
does not accurately portray the consequences of illegal drug use. The reason I say this is because
majority of the artist loosley talk about selling drugs along with using drugs in their music.
