This article focuses on exploring the way racism can pose a hindering effect on the life of
a young African-American girl (Keandra Johnson), especially on the effects it could pertain
to her mental health. The She also goes on discussing the complexity of race, how it is not
a binary system (as it has been established in America) but rather a complex and multiracial
spectrum of many races. The author goes on talking about the way racism has created both
anger and sadness on Keandra and in the internal conflict these emotions have caused her.
Amy Masko is a credible source as she an affiliate of the Grand Valley State University.
She is a professor of the English education and she has also done other research on areas
such as urban education, after school programs, and multicultural education. Throughout
this paper she uses many sources that help support her claims. She even goes as far as
explaining the terminology she is using for those readers (like me) who do not know much
about issues such as this one. This article will definitely help me on my research paper as
it gives a more in depth look at the effects of racism on a single young woman (Keandra

Johnson), which helps as an illustration of the lives of other children of color. She brings
up valid points that it is also up to the adults that surround these children of color to talk
about race and engage in meaningful debates that help the children who suffer the effects
of racism on a daily basis.
