This article written by R. Y. Langham states some of the most common causes of teenage
pregnancies in the United States. This article has no thesis, it simply hits of the top
factors that influence pregnancy in adolescents. The first cause the author states is peer
pressure. She mentions that many students participate in sexual activities because they
want to fit in, having no sense of what could come of their behavior. The next cause is
the absence of guidance from parents. Another factor is what Langham refers to as the
“glamorization of pregnancy”. She says that many young girls want to fit in there have
been many instances of girls trying to get pregnant because their friends are. Another
obvious factor she talks about is the lack of sexual knowledge. Another leading factor
according to the Guttmacher Institute is sexual abuse or rape. The instate claims that a
high percentage of teens state that the age of their fathers are at least twenty-seven years
old. Their studies have also found that five percent of teen pregnancies are the result of
rape. The last cause she lists is teen drinking. This article was written for many
audiences such as parents, teachers, and even children in order to inform people of the
causes with hopes to slow down teen pregnancies.
