The University of Georgia (UGA) Career Center conducted a study on the impact of
unpaid internships on undergraduate career development and employment outcomes. 348
students completed a survey that focused on different aspects of college experience
including participation in paid and unpaid internship activity, Greek life, community
service, leadership, sports, and involvement with general social or professional
organizations. The study found that participants in “unpaid internships were 11 percent
less likely to report high levels of satisfaction with their first job”(6). It also found that
unpaid internship participation exhibited a strong negative influence on student
acceptance of a job offer prior to graduation. However, the study found “Unpaid
internships were correlated to positive outcomes in the areas of confirming or rejecting
career interests, setting and attaining career goals, quality of supervision, and
networking”(18). The findings of the study support the claim that unpaid internships
produce positive results in the career goal and interest aspect, but negative results in the
level of satisfaction and job employment.
