Fair Trade USA. “Number of Fair Trade Certified Products in The United States from 1998 to
2016, by Category (in Millions).” Statista – The Statistics Portal, Statista,
www.statista.com/statistics/633956/fair-trade-products-us/, Accessed 15 Nov 2017
In the survey from Statista titled “Number of fair trade certified products in the United
States from 1998 to 2016, by category” it shows how fair trade has grown since 1998. The
survey sources information from the Fair Trade USA 2016 Almanac to provide this information
on a timeline. Beginning in 1998, fair trade barely existed. Before 2001, coffee was the only fair
trade certified product being produced. In 2007, there were seven different categories of fairly
traded products.
According to the survey, since 2003, fair trade has rapidly grown from year to year.
Bringing us to where we stand today. As of 2016, there were 13 different categories for products
that are fair trade certified. The survey shows that all products, except for coffee (which has
fluctuated in the past few years), continue to increase in amount. Produce is currently the most
fairly traded product.
Statista is a top cyber statistical source. It is globally known and has a large team of well-
known experts and also gains information from recognized schools and organizations. The
source that the information was gathered from is very well-known as well. Fair Trade USA takes
credit for collaborating and developing a criteria for companies to be certified and known as a
Fair Trade company. This survey was conducted in 2016 with information gained from 1998 to
2016. I think that this timeline is relevant to show how much attention fair trade has gained and
how much it has expanded in the last 20 years. This survey was a very narrow subject, as it only
shows the different categories of Fair Trade and how each category has expanded.

This source was important for my research and helped me to understand what fair trade
started off as, and how much it has grown. In 1998, coffee was the only fairly traded product and
today there is a handful of different fair trade certified products. Fair trade is still a new issue and
this survey was important because it shows that fair trade will only continue to grow.
Glazer, Sarah. “Fair Trade Labeling.” CQ Researcher, 18 May 2007, pp. 433-56,
library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/cqresrre2007051800
In the CQ Researcher article titled “Fair Trade Labeling” by Sarah Glazer, the author
speaks on the fair trade issue and how it effects small farmers in other countries. Glazer talks
about the pros and cons of fair trade, how companies are using it to their advantage, and where
changes still need to be made.
