Simonit, S., Connors, J. P., Yoo, J., Kinzig, A., & Perrings, C. (2015, April 2). The impact of
forest thinning on the reliability of water supply in central Arizona. PLOS | Public Library Of
Science. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0121596
Central Arizona, which has been one of many systems that have seen low amounts of
rainfall, and because of this they have always needed to be on top of the strategies that have been
proven to be effective for the waterfall risks. Managing these risks has been split into three
different topics: hard infrastructure, landscape management within the watershed, and a
supporting set of institutions of which water markets are frequently the most important. This
report consisted of the ways that these three elements interacted with each other. The first model
was with the thinning of the Ponderosa Pine forest across the different rivers and how it would
impact the reliability and cost of getting water to the city of Phoenix. The overall consensus was
that the forest thinning was not very likely to have an influence on the reliability of the reservoir
system, but the thinning does show the ability to increase the annual water supply.
