This is a motivational sports movie carried by Samuel L Jackson, and it is based on a true
story, as Ken Carter, who is a basketball coach, handles out tough love to the multi-ethnic playas
on a sinking high school team. Daily, he would wear what looks like a $3000 suit. Coach Carter
would shape up the children through a zillion press-ups. Coach Carter outlaws the children’s use
of the degrading n-word by demanding excellent academic grades. When he noticed no change,
Carter went ahead to bench the entire team and locks the gym. Some guys eventually rebelled,
and others are quitting to flirt with the specious thrill of street crime before begging for the
readmission. One guy in the team is a yo-yo and has his Latino gang, whom he packs a piece and
whom the police do not question despite being a witness when his cousin Macho was riddled
with bullets. It is good entertainment, which makes it interesting to compare Tom Wolfe’s
relentless novel, ‘I am Charlotte Simmons.’
