1. Devocalization is a surgical procedure in order to muffle or eliminate dogs’ barking and
cats’ meowing. The tissue will be removed from the animal’s vocal cords. Some pet
owners who made this kind of choice usually cannot stand the noise of their pets barking
any more.
2. One of those alternatives to devocalize pets is oral approach. In the oral approach, the
doctors will insert instruments through the oral cavity and into the vocal cord area. The
advantages of this approach are less invasive and costly. However, the low successful rate
will lead a higher incidence of ‘webbing’, in other words, a higher risk of future
respiratory problems.
3. I was totally not very aware of devocalization in pets before reading this article and
watching the video. After watching the video, listening to the devocalized dogs, and
hearing the opinions from some veterinarians, I believe the devocalization is so cruel. It
destroys animals’ nature just for people’s own benefits and fun.
4. Declawing is to remove animals’ claws by cutting all of the distal phalanges or end
bones of the animal’s toes. Cats’ nails are closely adhered to the bone. As a result in order
to declaw a cat, doctors need to amputate the last bone of the cat’s claw, in other words, the
last joint of a cat’s toes. It is not hard to understand this operation is extremely cruel and
painful for animals to undergo.
5. The first alternative is the nail caps and double-sided sticky tapes. Nail caps are not
harmful to cats. The soft caps will be glued on to a cat’s claws to prevent scratching
