a Speech at Pennsylvania Hall on May 17, 1838. Angelina Emily Grimke Weld was born in
Charleston, South Carolina on February 20, 1805 into a wealthy slave-holding family. Grimke
was the last born of fourteen children, to Mary Smith Grimke and John Grimke. Her mother
descended from a wealthy South Carolina family, which included two governors during colonial
times. Her father descended from German and Huguenot settlers, and had been a Continental
