The Lottery, written in 1948 by Shirley Jackson, was a very disturbing story that raised a
lot of controversy. The setting is a warm, sunny day in late June. Basically the the people of this
town are into tradition. They all pick up their children, who are collecting rocks, and meet in the
town square; as if they were gathering for a town meeting, or a square dance. They speak civil
