WHAT IS ANATOMY ?
Anatomy was first studied by dissection,
the careful cutting apart of body structures
to study their relationships.
Herophilus (325-255 B.C.): an ancient Greek
anatomist who did the first ever scientific human
cadaveric dissections. He is regarded as the father
of human anatomy for his fundamental discoveries
concerning the anatomy of the brain, eye, and
reproductive organs.
WHAT IS ANATOMY ?
Andreas Vesalius: Flemish anatomist (1514-1564),
the father of modern anatomy. His major work,
De Humani Corporis Fabrica (1543), contained
accurate descriptions of human anatomy, but
owed much of its great historical impact to the
woodcuts of his dissections.
WHAT IS ANATOMY ?
Whereas anatomy deals with structures of the body,
physiology is the science of body functions how the body parts work.
The structure and function
are so closely related.
The bones of the skull join tightly to form
a rigid case that protects the brain.
The bones of the fingers are more loosely
joined to allow a variety of movements.
BRANCHES OF ANATOMY
BRANCH OF ANATOMY STUDY OF
Gross Anatomy Structures that can be examined without a
microscope (with naked eyes).
Systemic Anatomy Structure of specific systems of the body such as
the nervous or respiratory systems.
Regional/Topographic Anatomy Specific regions of the body such as the head
or chest.
Surface Anatomy Surface markings of the body to understand
internal anatomy through inspection &palpation.
BRANCHES OF ANATOMY
BRANCH OF ANATOMY STUDY OF
Imaging Anatomy Internal body structures that can be visualized
with techniques such as X-rays, Ultrasound,
CT scans, MRI,
