An Egalitarian Society
Throughout ancient and modern civilization, equality has never prevailed overall in a
society. Oppression from governments where people have been enslaved or kept from being
equal through the use of laws has kept equality from being accomplished. Competition among
men has given one a sense that men who succeed are greater than men who have failed.
Inequality through oppression has been seen throughout times by means of slavery; in a
democratic society, however, competition allows men to strive; allowing for inequality. Even in
Communist societies, inequality prevails; though many of the citizens in a Communist society
are “equal,” the rulers and their loyalties are denoted as commanders rather than commoners. In
“Harrison Bergeron,” Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. portrays a society in which everyone is mentally,
physically and socially equal. The story shows how an equal society is not the best type of
