Looking back on the short history of this country, it is sad to say that most generations of
Americans have known a war, or even two, in their lifetime. Even though this is true, not all
American's can understand what the men and women who fought in these wars went through. George
Browne's An American Soldier in World War I gives a glimpse into such a life. David Snead does an
excellent job following the Rainbow Division from creation to their return to the US after occupation.
He centers the book on “Brownie” and his letters back to the States to his fiancé “Marty”. This book
gave you a real heartfelt look at the hopes and fears of an American doughboy in WWI while also
giving you the big picture in the war.
It does take long to realize that this war was going to take a toll on the young couples'
relationship, from the separation to the silence due to many different reasons, to the fact that war will
