Safety in workplace always becomes the main concern and first priority in construction
world. In certain low literacy countries where people have difficulties in writing and
reading, it has shown a sharp increase in number of accidents at the construction site due to
low awareness of workplace safety. An advanced technology has been developed by
Professor Akutagawa Shinichi from Kobe University Graduate School of Engineering to
indicate the danger level at the workplace through visual implementation. He introduced
On-Site Visualization (OSV) in metro system construction sites to monitor the workplace
safety.
On-Site Visualization (OSV) is the latest real-time processing technology with built in
LEDs to inspect the condition of walls and pillars by specific measurement and thus ensure
a safe level of security in the building site. This device is installed on the walls and pillars
of the building to measure the level of irregularities and angle of tilting of the walls. It
works like traffic light mechanism to indicate the safety level in the building construction,
ranging from blue color for “no irregularities” to yellow and red color for “danger of
collapse”. It is very useful invention particularly for countries with low literacy rate.
This invention has been applied at three metro system construction sites in the center of
Jakarta in Indonesia for a fixed period of time to analyze the results. According to head of
construction at Jakarta MRT (2016), he stated that “We can now expect higher standards of
safety management”. This innovation will definitely improve the foundation for safety
supervision and management on construction projects.
