My experience disconnecting myself from digital technology was something I would
have never considered doing ever. I decided to conduct this experiment on November 20th. I
specially chose a day to disconnect myself from my phone, laptop and television because I was
scheduled to work that day and figured that not only it would make time go by fast, but the job
will keep me busy enough that I wouldn’t think about it. That Sunday morning, I woke up
around 8am without the memorized sound to my alarm clock. At first it was weird because every
day I normally wake with my phone fully charged beside my bed, I was so used to looking at my
phone screen every time I woke up. That morning I started my day off by taking a shower, eating
breakfast, and doing some school work. Later I went to work, at my job at Asics, we use IPads in
the form of cash registers and so because of this, I was not completely disconnected from
technology.
During this whole experience, I did not necessarily notice anything out of the ordinary ,
of course I noticed the usually people whom are constantly on their phone while they are walking
or talking to their friends as they stare down to the glare of their phone screens. I like to think of
myself as someone who knows when to use my phone at the appropriate. As an example I know
it not appropriate to use a phone while in class , when I am talking to someone or having dinner ;
and because I was already used to not checking my phone at work , this experience did not affect
me as much . One the other hand, I cannot imagine the people who are always on their phones
what it must have been like , I was probably the worst day of their lives not have their phone on
and constantly vibrating.
What is missed the most was the ability to call my friends to see how they are doing.
With my phone, I was capable of reaching my friends in my many different ways within a matter
of seconds. I also missed the ability of using the internet , whenever I am doing some school ,
whenever I am stuck on a question , I rely greatly on the internet to help answer mu question
which saves me time , but because I was disconnected , I was forced to think on my own.
Technology is neither good nor bad, presently; we are surrounded by technology everywhere we
go, it used in our workplace, by our doctors, our teachers and so we can’t be fully disconnected. I
