1. What issues divided Federalist and Democratic-Republicans in the first party system
(1789-1815)?
On February 1789 marked the first day the U.S. Electoral College met and unanimously
chose to elect George Washington as the first president. It was though with the unanimous
decision of president that pure cooperation would follow suit, this was not the case. During
Washington’s first term the cabinet and Congressed remained divided. The divide was
caused by the signing of the bill of rights and the political disagreements regarding federal
power and attitudes towards Britain and France. The divided parties were the Federalist led
by Alexander Hamilton and the Democratic Republicans led by Thomas Jefferson.
The Federalist had many beliefs opposite to that of the Democratic Republicans. The
Federalist was mostly comprised of a merchants, property owners, and urban workers in
commercial enterprises. The Federalist had a strong belief in maintaining federal power,
increased taxation, and keeping the educated in power. They believed that an international
relationship with Britain should be reestablished with the succession of the revolutionary
war. The Federalist opposed the French revolution. The federalist believed in a political
view of liberty as traditional republican values and the elite leadership, but these values
didn’t hold strong after falling to the minority party after 1800.
The Democratic Republicans had a liberty view of a personal notion of democratic liberty
to the freedom of the majority people. The Democratic Republicans favored limited federal
power which later on meant state power. They wanted to remain hostile to Great Britain.
They were in high support of the French revolution wanting to give power to the people,
just like in the colonies. The Democratic Republicans were mostly comprised of southern
planter and northern farmers. The democratic Republicans became the majority party after
1800.

those of ordinary lives. It began as farmers were able to produce a surplus of good that
they could sell in a more wide variety than locally like in the past century. Other industries
created by city areas such as water power allowed for an new industry that made supplies
such are cotton and wool became more easily made. Last was the creation of new
