Definitions
1. Public Opinion- Citizens’ attitudes about political issues, leaders, institutions, and events.
2. Exit Polls- A poll taken of voters after they’ve left the polling booth.
3. Political Socialization- The induction of individuals into the political culture; learning the
underlying beliefs and values on which the political system is based.
4. Grandfather Clause- It is an old clause that still applies when new clauses have been made.
5. Literacy Test- A government practice to test the literacy (ability to read and write) of potential
citizens at the federal level, and potential voters at the state level.
6. Poll Tax- A tax upon every adult regardless of income or resources.
7. Australian Ballot- AKA Secret Ballot- System of voting in which voters mark their choices in
privacy on uniform ballots printed and distributed by the government.
8. White Primary- An election within a political party to select the party’s nominees for public
offices. It’s called a white primary because people of color were not allowed to vote.
9. Political Party- An organized group that attempts to influence the government by electing
members of their party to important governmental roles.
