1. Create a case scenario about a pediatric patient present to the pharmacy with
either cough, cold, allergy, or bacterial infection.
2. The case should have the following headings: chief complaint, history of present
illness, past medical history, social history, active medications, allergy history.
3. Find a peer reviewed article or FDA guidance or textbook about the illness and
review the current guidelines, REFERENCE your text as you write your assessment.
4. Write a thorough assessment (with the references above) about why the patient
is having these symptoms, the diagnosis, what OTC/self-care options are
available. The advantage and disadvantages of each of these options for the
patient.
Nasal Mucous membrane is inflamed due to foreign protein material being
concentrated into the posterior nasopharynx…allergic reactions related to the
nose are caused by the antigen antibody response due to the allergens interacting
with the IgE molecules that are bound to the basophils and mast cells of the nose1
which causes IgE sensitization…the reexposure of these allergens causes the
release of a large amount of inflammatory mediators such as
histamine1..histamine causes itching, sneezing, and runny nose. The sensory
nerve stimulation produces the itching and sneezing is caused by the reflex
stimulation of efferent vagal pathways1; protein component of pollen grains are
more than likely the culprit; the patient has seasonal allergic rhinitis since his
symptoms recently began during the spring season with him spending more time
outdoors for track. He doesn’t have perennial allergic rhinitis since that would
mean his symptoms would be year round; Antihistamines and Intranasal steroids1
