Jack Ma, by borrowed $ 2,000 to set up the company since his dream was set up his own
e-commerce company. Then, another investment was the general manager of China
Telecom offered to invest $185,000 to do a joint venture. In 1999, he gathered 18 people in
my apartment and spoke to them for two hours about my vision. Everyone put their money
on the table, and that got us $60,000 to start Alibaba. By 2002, they had only enough cash
to survive for 18 months. Jack had a lot of free members using their site, and they didn’t
know how to make money. So they developed a product for China exporters to meet U.S.
buyers online. This model saved them. By the end of 2002, we made $1 in profits.
