When people are consuming alcoholic beverages they are usually not aware
of how much alcohol content is in their drink. Most times the amount of liquor in a
can, glass, or bottle doesn’t add up to how much alcohol the drink actually contains.
In most cases a wide variety of light beers have almost and equal amounts of alcohol
as a regular beer. A regular beer contains 5% alcohol and a variety of light beers only
have 1% less alcohol than thus of a regular beer. A standard drink is stated as
follows: 12 ounces of regular beer is usually about 5% alcohol, 5 ounces of wine, is
about 12% alcohol, and lastly 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits which are hard liquors is
about 40% alcohol.
Under age drinking is a risky and illegal act of behavior. The legal age in
which a person is able to drink is 21. Under age drinking is a nationwide public
health dilemma because of the many risks it poses. It is said that although young
people drink less than adults, they drink more at one time than adults do. By the age
of just 15 half of teenagers have obtained at least one drink and by age 18 70% of
teens have drank at least one drink. Other risks of under age drinking are death,
serious injury, impaired judgment, increased risk for physical and sexual assault,
and brain development issues.
College drinking can be harmful, but not necessarily because of the actually
act of drinking, but the amount consumed at once. Statistics show that four out of
five college student’s drink and about half of them who do drink participate in binge
drinking. The dangers are very similar to under age drinking. Nearly 1,825-college
students die every year from alcohol related injuries, and more than 690,000
students have reported assault from someone who was intoxicated. Also about 25%
of students report having academic problems because of alcoholic reasoning.
How women and men drink are very different. Because women have less water in
their bodies it doesn’t take much to get a lady intoxicated. Women face higher and
more sever risk than men while under the influence of alcohol. The reason being is
because for one woman weighs a lot less than men cause the alcohol to move into
