The original team goals of the management system initiated at Marshalls
compare more with the basic principals of human resource management. The
company used a team management approach because the organization was
supposed to be designed to maximize organizational productivity throughout
the facility and meet the individual needs of their employees. Even though
they did not succeed with this, the plant also wanted happier employees and
an overall better company morale. All of these set goals were based upon from
the distinct human resource approach. The Maslow Hierarchy of Needs theory
would most likely argue that the physiological needs, safety needs, and
affiliation needs are all to be fulfilled, but not so much as the esteem needs or
the need for self-actualization. The team management approach Marshall tried
to initiate was not liked by the teams of employees, nor was it respected.
Some employees went to the extent to even refused to participate, and
because of this, the needs were not being satisfied. McGregorʼs theory X and
theory Y would suggest that the company (Marshalls) is more of a theory Y
type of organization. Reason is being, one of the goals set to achieve with the
team management system was to improve the overall employee morale. More-
so , McGregor could also argue that Marshalls also represents the X theory,
reasons being is because, the employees were not happy with the changes
made and that management did not show signs of rewarding them for their
