Essay Questions:
1) List and explain the three models of incarceration that have been prominent
during the past five decades. Also, be sure to identify in what time period
each model was most strongly advocated. Which model is most frequently
used today and why?
Custodial Model:
Assumes that prisoners are incarcerated for the purpose of incapacitation,
deterrence, or retribution. It emphasizes on the act of security, discipline and order
which puts the prisoner under the authority of the warden. The discipline is strict
and most aspects of the prisoner’s behavior and time there are regulated. This
Model prevailed in the correction system before World War 2 and continues to
dominate maximum-security institutions.
Rehabilitation Model:
Developed in the 1950s, it emphasizes treatment programs designed to reform
the inmate. According to this model, security and housekeeping activities are
preconditions for rehabilitation efforts. As all aspects of the facility should be
towards the rehabilitation and professional treatment of the inmates. Treatment
programs exist in most contemporary institutions, but since the rethinking of
rehabilitation goal in the 1970s, so very few prisons use this model in current
times.
