How does contemporary representation of specific social groups compare to that of previous
time periods?
Representation has always proved to be a crucial part of the media. It is a way to add
meaning to a multitude of both things and situations. However, representation is constantly
changing. New representation is seen often, and old representation sometimes dies out. Not only
can this be seen in film, bit video games have also shown change as well. While representation is
always present in the media, it is something that is always changing and updating.
The main thing to talk about is the LGBTQ representation in the media. As people have
become much more accepting over the last few years, representation of this community is seen
much more often. Years ago, it may not have not been as normal as it is now to see
representation of homosexuality in film, for example. However, that has since changed. As
people have become much more acceting and open to the gay community, the media
representation has shifted. One good example is Friends From College. This show has two gay
male characters. What I have noticed from this show is that it gievs the gay characters specifi
characteristics. For example, it shows one of the gay characters as being uptight and very
