First off, representation can be defined in two ways, first speaking for or on the behalf of
someone, and secondly, the perception of something in a particular way of being from a
certain nature. African representation is by far a huge negative in America, especially
through the media. This gives us citizens, many misconceptions about how it really is.
One story of Africa is perceived as a whole, which is wrong due to the fact that it is a big
country. Sure it is perceived as “hell” with the poverty and many African gangs such as
the “Somali Pirates” and many more, along with the drugs, and much more. That
however is what we know, what I know from being a United States citizen, and I have no
idea how bad or good it really is, I have never been there. However, I have friends who
were born and raised there and have told me stories, it is definitely not bad in all parts
like what we were lead to perceive. We have a “false image” of this country and it is all
due to the media expressing the bad and nothing coming close to the actual good. In
reality, Africans take pride with their self-representation, they hold themselves to equal
standards, which is absolutely the right thing to do. They have as much potential as
anyone else to produce anything, hence Nollywood, the second largest producer of annual
film making in terms of quantity. No matter how oppressed they are or feel, they stick to
tradition and culture and take the utmost pride in their beliefs and their land, in reality
they have much more appreciation for the natural world than any of us truly do. They
want to make it big and get out of poverty, however the corruption and drug trade needs
to come to a complete stop. They envision breaking out of the “third world country”
