Should Division I Athletes be paid?
I. Introduction
There are more than 460,000 NCAA Student Athletes. Last year the NCAA made 912.3
Million dollars (NCAA.org, 2015)
A major Issue surrounding College sports today is should Division 1 college athletes be
paid? The past three years I lived with baseball players from the University of Minnesota,
two of whom I have been friends with since high school. I have seen 2rst-hand the
benefit and disadvantages of being a division one college athlete.
Although Student-Athletes spend a lot of their time on their sports, and still have to
participate in school I do not think they should be paid to play a sport. Student-Athletes
shouldn’t be paid because it is not what college is about, it would take away from
recruiting, and in a way student athletes are already getting paid.
II. Main point 1: The purpose of college is to get an education not to get paid to play a
sport
Division 1 student- athlete are not professionals and therefore should not be
paid. The purpose of college is to get training and experience to use in the
future.
Just like a regular college student goes to college to gain more experience and to
improve their skills so that they can get a job and get paid. College athletes play
at the college level to improve their skills, and gain experience in their sport they
play to use at the professional level where they will be paid.
