Advancement of Time:
Ovo Adagha and Molara Wood’s One World, Elif Shafaks’s The Bastard of Istanbul and
Chinamanda Adichie’s Americanah
In English 233 this semester, I learned a lot through short stories, novels, and poetry
selections from a range of cultures around the world. We also watched films, Ted Talks, and
documentaries that focused on the theme of cultural diversity. From looking at these texts we
learned about the importance of the past, whether it would benefit or hinder someone’s
belonging to one’s cultural identity. Also, and more importantly, we looked at issue’s that are
shaping the present day events. In my final paper, I will show you what we learned within this
literature. By looking at One World, The Bastard of Istanbul, Americanah, films and real life, it is
clear that these issues are still prominent and we need to keep revisiting them to better the
future.
