Addressing Mental Health Issues: A Necessity for the Veterans Affairs Department
Throughout history military personnel have been fighting, dying, and sacrificing their
health to save a specific ideal that they hold dear. Throughout each battle military personnel are
prone to receive direct trauma to themselves or see brothers and sisters that they hold dear suffer
trauma or death. The mental strain that these select individuals undergo leads to multiple mental
health disorders that could plague everyone for a lifetime. Disorders such as post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD), depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), suicide, and suicidal
ideation have been some of the more common cases of mental health disorders in the veteran and
military population. Overall, the increasing rates of suicide and mental health issues within the
military community calls for a modification in current mental health programs.
