Abortion in The United States
When does taking a life become illegal in your opinion? In 1973, when the Roe v.
Wade case was finalized, amendments nine and fourteen changed drastically. America
has become a throw away society, and in today’s world that applies to unborn babies as
well. Many studies have been preformed about this issue and one states that eighty-six
percent of all abortions that are preformed are only in the selfishness of the parents. As
sad as this may seem, this is why there needs to be abortion reform.
When the World Trade Center was hit on 9/11 close to three thousand deaths
occurred. Every day the silent horror, called abortion, takes more lives than the
terrorists did that day. Of all the wars in America’s history, there have been millions of
deaths. Each year, deaths caused by abortion total up to beat this statistic. Just since
1973, after the Roe v. Wade case, approximately 53 million silent deaths have been
preformed.
As a country, the United States has become very susceptible to the ease of
abortion. We do not even realize how horrifying it has become. We think that it is either
the only way, the best way, or the easiest way to solve the problem. Unwanted
pregnancies, as a lot of people refer to as “problems”, should not be solved by taking
the easy way out. Although this is the chosen way in most cases, it is why America
thinks the way it does today.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary online the definition of murder is
the crime of deliberately killing a person. Is a baby not counted as a person? When
does a baby become a living organism? In an article by James D. Agresti he found a
textbook about embryos called, Before We Are Born: Essentials of Embryology and
Birth Defects, which states that the zygote and early embryo are living human
organisms. Any time between five and ten weeks after the women’s last menstrual cycle
is the optimum time for an abortion to be preformed. At five weeks being the earliest to
have an abortion, therefore the egg would have already been fertilized for three weeks,
meaning the baby has developed eyes, a portion of the spinal cord, and partial brain
development. Therefore abortion fits the definition of murder.
