The Analysis
In his article, “What I saw at the Abortion,” Richard Selzer explains about abortion that
he experienced in the operating room at the first time. This article is sufficient to persuade
readers from the side of pro-life point of view because it is based on his direct experiences as a
professional doctor. Also, there are no any biases or stereotypes in his article. Selzer focus on
express that he witnessed a horrible scene, and how he had felt. These powerful techniques such
as assertive tone and interesting terminology lead readers to sympathize with his point of view.
When he uses recondite medical terms, he tries to minimize those, or he explains what it is. For
instance, he notes, “…outpouring of disease-phlegm,pus,vomitus,” or “…prostaglandin- a
substance found normally in the body.” It is very helpful and useful to understand the article.
Moreover, he depicts his memories of the operating room fluidly and expressively. He states,
“The needle comes closer in the pool. The point grazes the thigh, and I stir. Perhaps I wake form
dozing. The light is there again. I twist and straighten. My arms and legs push. My hand finds the
shaft-grabs! Grab.” Even though readers are not in the operating room, he let readers to feel what
is happening around there. He does not note directly that he opposes abortion; however, he
indirectly expresses his opinion in the article. For example, he notes, “We are six, I think. I think
we are seven. Something strangles there. An effort, binds me to it. I do not shove to the table. I
take no little step. It would be…well, madness. Everyone here wants the needle where it is. Six
do. No, five do.” He describes with a metaphorical expression that abortion is murder, and he
