“A Worn Path” Discussion Question 3, Page 17
In Eudora Welty’s short story “A Worn Path,” Phoenix Jackson was an African American
who faced struggles throughout her journey, but never let her inferiority or disadvantages
discourage her. For example, when Phoenix walks near the woods, she is approached by a white
hunter who points a gun to her. After refraining from moving, the hunter states “You must be a
hundred years old, and scared of nothing. I’d give you a dime if I had any money with me.”
