A Want or a Need?
This story, Wants by Grace Paley
is not one to pull you right in and grab your attention.
It is a story that I had to read more than once for me to understand the hidden message. The
author shows a conversation between two individuals an interaction, a stream of consciousness
and a recollection of events switching between the past and the present. The characters were a
once married couple, who happened to run into each other during an awkward interaction at the
bookstore. In this order the author tells a story first of what had previously happened to the main
character and then how these actions have shaped the main character and changed their thinking.
We are introduced to the idea of growth in this passage; there is a mood of change. The story
