When reading, A True Story it was very hard to understand but at the same time extremely
interesting. I’m not a big reader I have to force myself and get focused on reading, but
after reading these stories so far this was one I liked the best. I can’t give a reason why but
it was a good story to read and understand what this person had gone through in the 1800’s
being in slavery. Looking at people and never knowing what they did or are through,
unless they tell you their story. Some can hide it very well and some just wear it on their
shoulders.
The dialect was written on African American who was a slave, about sixty years young
who also separated from her husband and children that were sent to slave market before
the Civil War. When the question was asked “why, you can’t have had any trouble?” He
had never heard her sigh, and never seen her eyes when there wasn’t a laugh, she starts to
tell him the story of her life. How she was a slave and describing her son Henry he got hurt
but “an de nigggers didn’t fly aroun’ fas’ enough to ‘tend to him.” She hid her feelings well
and made everyone believe she was a happy person with nothing bothering her.
It did seem like was a very strong women who stood her ground and wouldn’t let anything
get by. Stood up to them proudly and gave them a piece of her mind. Their language was
