The End of the Past
A monument is a statue, building, or other structure erected to commemorate a famous or
notable person or event. A fallen monument, as William Faulkner uses it in A Rose for Emily, is
something or someone that has been tarnished or has vanished but was once great and stood for
something. Miss Emily and the Grierson family once was a very august family. They stood for a
lot of things and were always looked up to and held on a pedestal. Miss Emily is called a fallen
