Both narrators from A & P and Greasy Lake are two young men in their late teens.
Sammy from A & P is working at his family store not too far from the beach. His days revolve
around trying to get the a.ention of a group of girls that regularly come in. The narrator from
Greasy Lake has just finished his first day of college and is on his third day of summer vacation.
His days revolve around hanging out with his two friends Digby and Je2. They drink, smoke,
cause mischief, and purse a rebellious party 1led life. Despite being two young men of similar
age these two individual could not be more different.
Sammy’s only pursuit in A & P is to obtain the a.ention of the girls that regularly a.end
his family’s store. “The one that caught my eye first was the one in the plaid green two-piece”
(Updike 16). As soon as the girls first enter the store he is immediately drawn to her and her
friends. Then as the story progressives he describes individually how he feels about each girl in
the group. “The store’s pre.y empty, it being Thursday a:ernoon, so there was nothing much to
do except lean on the register and wait for the girls to show up again” (Updike 18). Despite the
fact during their first visit the girls paid him no mind he still feels compelled to them and is
actively waiting their return. More time elapses and the girls eventually return only to be
