A Mother’s First Birth
Imagine being told for the first time that you were to have a child, and that the
entire wellbeing, physical and mental health, and the whole life of the child was in your
hands; what would you do? In this paper I interview my mother, Mary Godfrey, about her
experiences during her pregnancy, birth, and aftercare of her first child as well as her
thoughts and practices of childrearing. I will then analyze her experience using various
theories from our textbook, “Children”. The pregnancy referred to in this interview
occurred twenty-one years ago in 1992 with my older sister Victoria.
While interviewed, Mary explained that her first pregnancy was “very stressful”
