aMechanical Machination
A machine is an apparatus that has several parts, each
with a definite function, and together they perform a specific
task. In One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey the
theme of machinery parallels with events that the narrator,
Chief Bromden, experiences. Although these events are Chief’s
distorted perception “it’s the truth even if it didn’t happen” (p.
8). Chief describes every aspect of life from inside and outside
of the ward using mechanical terms. He refers to society as the
Combine and the ward as “a factory for the Combine.” (p. 40),
