The ride back home
The bus ride back home should be quick; hopefully no one tries to intervene. As I took a
seat in the bus, I looked out the window and noticed a young woman’s books drop to the floor
papers about to fly from her folder. A young man closed the folder just in time. I didn’t even
know where he came from, but he magically appeared. That’s when I started to think about what
love is, and how people feel love.
I overheard a conversation, two women laughing about how strange love is. One of the
women told the other that in one second you tell someone you love them, and a moment later
you tell the next person on the list the same thing. The other women responded, “dear, in life you
fall in love seven times. You still have still have a long way to go.” Hearing this, I wondered to
myself how powerless love could truly be. I admit my life is powerless because things don’t go
the way I’d like them to go, including love. Then again, the purpose of life is to love time and
time again. Love is a risky business: I could either loose or win. But to some people that business
is worth investing in. Throughout my life I was taught that, even though love is a mystery, we
are meant to make some type of history with it.
On that bus ride back home, I saw young couples holding hands as they walked, but their
eyes, hearts, and smiles were with someone else. I noticed that with just one look, because I also
felt that way. I saw old couples walking, holding hands, their smiles, eyes, and hearts in constant
