A Compulsory Draft is Not the Answer!
Most older Americans are familiar with the now iconic Uncle Sam poster “I Want
You! This poster served as a call to arms during World War 2. It reminded men of their
patriotic duty to serve their country and encouraged them to join the army. Beginning in
1940, all men between ages 18 and 25 were required to register for the draft. There were
specific circumstances that allowed men to defer the draft, for example, student
deferment during the Vietnam War. Any men that were enrolled in college classes were
