Essay 4: Motivational Factors for Writing the Book
A Child Called “It,” along with many of Dave Pelzer’s other books are highly emotional
novels. It is evident that in order to be influenced to retell such a traumatic experience, one must
be heavily motivated. A variety of possible factors could have contributed such as; money,
negative attachments with his mother, or using the book as an emotional outlet.
The most obvious of all the reasons that is questioned is whether or not Dave told his
story for the benefit of his pocket book. It is noticeable that between the time Dave was enlisted
in the U.S. Air Force and his book became a success, no other major career moves were
documented. As an easy option for a career, Dave could have been motivated to write about his
story to catch the attention of the media. Because this is an undoubtedly a negative motivator,
this lowers the validity of the book. Unfortunately, it brings question to whether certain events
